Palimpsest project - November 2017
Natural Phenomena
My palimpsest project is about waves and the movement of the sea. Natural phenomena. This idea came about when I was stripping back areas of my plate using the grinding machine. The lines the grinder left looked as if they were flowing like that of a wave. I then began to focus on wave movement. By looking at the works of Hokusai and Iwami Reika, I came up of the idea of a graphic wave for my plate.
I chose graphic waves as I like their shape and structure. After fulfilling my idea of exploring different things with my graphic wave, I then stripped back the wave again to re-etch a more realistic, rough and rugged wave. For this I have looked at the works of Vija Celmins and Vanessa Dawes. I am doing this to show growth and movement about how the wave flows from graphic to realistic. I am trying to show the pushing and pulling movements of waves through the palimpsest technique.
I chose this as I find it interesting how each wave can be different to the next, how no two waves are identical. I have displayed on my wall pictures that I have taken myself which shows the sea and waves in different stages; crashing, calm, gentle and frequent waves. These pictures were taken at different times of the day.
