Philosophy of Teaching

The role of a teacher is one that comes with responsibility, patience, and a willingness for your students to do well. It is also one of the most rewarding jobs a person can have.

Teaching art in class encourages the development of many skills including media and literacy skills, visual communication and team working skills, and also problem solving skills. It helps the students engage in a process that helps their development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, self-motivation and problem-solving. The students’ self-esteem will improve as there is no wrong or right in their self-creative work, meaning they are able to reflect on what they have done.

The Art Room in any school is a unique and an experimental space. It gives students the freedom and sometimes escapism to express themselves and gives them the opportunity to come out of their shell. I have often seen students unleash their creative side that they never knew they had while in the art room, and in turn have surprised themselves by doing so. Students who take an interest to art really do flourish in the art department.

My goal as a Art Teacher is to bring the students ideas to realisation while also encouraging them to have confidence in their work and allowing them to show their once hidden potential. I will do this my linking in other subjects (layers of learning), giving demonstrations to the class, working in a self-directed way, and also letting the students part take in project and group work.

As I am still a practicing printmaker, I am always learning new methods and creative ways to produce artwork. Similarly to a teacher, an artists work is never completed, and in the words of Michelangelo - "I am still learning".
